Celebrate your own National Doughnut Day
Just because a doughnut isn't healthy doesn't mean you can't celebrate National Doughnut Day. Don't worry about visiting Krispy Kreme locations or Dunkin Donuts locations. Try making your own instead. Start by creating a basic sweet dough, then just fry it and top as you wish. Try this recipe if it's your first time:
- Single large egg
- 1/4 cup sugar or sugar substitute
- 1/4 cup agave nectar or honey
- 1/2 cup milk or milk substitute
- 2 tablespoons melted shortening
- 2 cups flour
- two teaspoons baking powder, for rise
- Any toppings you would like – frosting, sprinkles, or cinnamon and sugar
Combine all the wet ingredients, then stir them to the flour and baking powder. Chill the dough until you can effortlessly work it, then roll it to half an inch thick. Heat vegetable oil to 375 degrees while the dough is chilling. Once you've cut out the shapes, fry them for a couple of minutes on each side. Drain the doughnuts on paper towel, and top to your pleasure.
