Disdain for Apple AT and T service spurs Verizon iPhone rumors

Apple CDMA order fuels latest round of Verizon iPhone rumors

Millions are enamored with their iPhones. But they hate the Apple/AT and T union. Rumors of a Verizon iPhone have been circulating for years. January 2011 is the most recent release date rumor for the Verizon iPhone as outlined by more unknown sources. The big clue individuals mention when spreading the iPhone Verizon rumor is another rumor – a big Apple Qualcomm order for chipsets that work on Verizon’s network. The question has been “if,” not when the Verizon iPhone will appear, ever since AT and T landed the exclusive iPhone carrier agreement when Apple introduced it in 2007.

Verizon iPhone rumors based on rumors

Many individuals tired of Verizon iPhone rumors just choose to ignore them. However, writing in Tech Crunch, Steve Cheney said the latest Verizon iPhone rumor is different. Cheney said he was confident that the rumors will finally become fact because of the DNA of Smartphone components that are traced through the supply chain. Translated from geek speak, this means that an order by Apple from Qualcomm has been detected for CDMA chipsets in time for making a batch of Verizon iPhones in December for a January introduction. Never mind the scoop about the Apple/Qualcomm order comes from “sources with knowledge of the entire situation”.

Apple Qualcomm iPhone anticipation

Apple’s AT and T GSM network doesn’t work with CDMA, the wireless standard for Verizon’s network. Although Apple’s CDMA order hasn’t been confirmed as fact, Business Week joined Tech Crunch in reporting that Apple suppliers are gearing up for making parts for a Verizon iPhone. Since the iPhone’s debut in 2007, Apple has sold more than 50 million of them. Business Week quoted UBS AG analyst John Hodulik as saying that ending AT and T’s exclusive iPhone contract will grant Verizon a leg up on its competitors on the Smartphone playing field. Hodulik estimates that the 92.8 million people who use Verizon may purchase 3 million iPhones every quarter.

Bloggers cry wolf on cue

The latest Verizon iPhone rumor joins a long list of false alarms for iPhone users who regard AT and T service as the only flaw in their ultimate device. PC World offered a history of Verizon iPhone rumors that started in Sept. 2008 when bloggers citing a tipster who had Verizon insider credentials said the rumor would come true in early 2009. Since then, Verizon iPhone release dates emerged in April 2009 (Early 2010), Oct. 2009 (70 percent chance in 2010), Oct. 2009 (late 2010), Jan 2010, (Jan. 2010!), March 2010, (late 2010) and May 2010 (early 2011).
