Dane Cook loses millions to half-sibling via embezzlement

McCauley, 45, of Wilmington, Mass., has pleaded guilty to embezzling huge amount of money from his half-brother, comedian/actor Dane Cook. The embezzlement is documented to have occurred from 2004 to 2008 when McCauley was Cook’s business manager, writes the Boston Globe. McCauley pleaded guilty to 27 counts of larceny in excess of $250 each, three counts of forgery, embezzlement and other charges, said Middlesex Superior Court prosecutors. A Mass. Judge has sentenced Darryl McCauley to 6 years in prison and probation that will continue for 10 years after his release from custody. $3 million check came from McCauley forged through Cook’s account

The Globe reports that Darryl McCauley transferred cash into his account from Dane Cook’s account numerous times, based on the office of Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley. Also, a $3 million check from Cook’s account to his was forged once. McCauley’s wife is being charged too. Larceny and receiving stolen property are what Erika is getting charged with.

Cook and McCauley from the beginning

Darryl McCauley was Dane Cook’s business manager from the beginning of Cook’s comedy career in the early 1990s until Dec 2008, when Cook first noticed that something had been amiss financially. McCauley has to give up real estate properties and business in Massachusetts and Maine in order for making up to the 38-year old Cook for what was stolen. All of the properties were technically owned by Cook. This is because stolen funds paid for the property.

From humor to acting

At the beginning of Dane Cook’s career, he did standup comedy. His brand of humor proved to be very popular with college students, but other comedians have tended to label Cook’s act as sophomoric. Some even say Dane Cook is “poseur” which is brave. However, Cook’s act did manage to serve as his gateway into film. He did well in romantic comedies as was shown in “Employee of the Month” with Jessica Simpson and “My Best Friend’s Girl” with Kate Hudson. In “Mr. Brooks,” he had been able to play a serial killer which was an odd role for him
