The newest take on Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe and directed by Ridley Scott, will be premiering at the Cannes film festival. It will hit theaters on May 14. How well this Robin Hood will do at the box office remains to be seen. In a grand trick of irony, should this Robin Hood gross a lot of cheap payday loans from ticket sales, it will actually be taking from the commoners and giving the money to the rich studio heads and actors.
New Robin Hood with slight twist
The Ridley Scott version of Robin Hood retreads many the same ground. Robin returns from the 3rd Crusade, having fought in the armed forces of Richard The Lionheart, and finds the populace terrorized by the Sheriff of Nottingham and King John. Robin fights back with the Merry Men of Sherwood Forest, robs from the rich and gives to the poor. It promises to be a rollicking good time, and also the new version attempts to be just a little a lot more faithful to the period than previous versions.
Cannes you do the Can Can?
The film will be premiering at the Cannes Film Festival. Unfortunately, Ridley Scott won’t be there. He recently had knee surgery, as outlined by USA Today, and his recovery isn't progressing as fast as he desired. Thus, the cast may have to walk the red carpet on the French Riviera sans the acclaimed director. It's actually the fifth time he and Crowe have worked together, so their partnership has indeed been a fruitful one.
There never was an actual Robin Hood
There is not any evidence for an actual Robin Hood, though the story is a wonderful tale of rebellion against an evil government. Then again, none of the famous American robbers gave to the poor either. King Richard really spent little time in England. In fact, he barely spoke a word of English. The rebellion against King John actually was for the benefit of the nobles, not the commoners. That said, the Magna Carta was a step in a good direction.
